I'll try not to make this too long: My experience is probably about a decade ahead of yours - I learned to read on Marvel Comics and 2000AD in the late 70's - so it was Mantlo and Golden's Micronauts that signaled my lifelong doom.

Micronauts were THE obsession for what must have been the crucial formative years of 1977-1980 (when Airfix went bust) and having the glorious Comic continue on after the disappearence of the toys kept me arrested despite entering puberty when we are supposed to put childhood behind us.

Toys went into boxes, boxes went into cupboards (lately the loft) but the Comics kept me in the Microverse until........summer 1984 and the first issue of Transformers. I'd almost made it out, but another bunch of little Japanese Robots arrived like re-enforcements to renew the choke hold and I've been cooked since.
